If you haven’t already read the recent report from the FDA regarding the removal of antibacterials from hand soaps, or safer alternatives, then keep reading!

The FDA has made another move in the right direction with their recent declaration regarding the safety of antibacterials. “Companies will no longer be able to market antibacterial washes with these ingredients because manufacturers did not demonstrate that the ingredients are both safe for long-term daily use and more effective than plain soap and water in preventing illness and the spread of certain infections,” said the FDA.

It will take a year for businesses to remove ingredients from hand soaps such as triclosan and triclocarban, which are used to make soap “antibacterial”. Other ingredient that may also undergo questioning are benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride and chloroxylenol (PCMX). There are at least 2,000 products available on the market that are labeled as “antibacterial” or “antimicrobial”, and some companies have already made steps to remove these chemicals from their had soaps and washes.

The FDA and the CDC both agree that soap doesn’t need added chemicals to make it more effective. In fact, there’s that shows antibacterial soap actually does more harm than good. Why? Because it kills good bacteria, and can cause antibiotic resistance. As a result, your body won’t be able fight off bad bacteria.

Luckily, there are safe and effective alternatives for kids and adults that will keep your hands clean from infections and bacteria (especially with the flu season right around the corner)! I recommend Beautycounter’s Rose Neroli Hand Soap or Citrus Mimosa Hand Wash.

beautycounter hand soapThe Rose Neroli Hand Soap gently cleanses your hands without drying them out. Made with hydrating ingredients such as organic shea butter and organic, antioxidant marula and mongogo oils. Plus, it leaves a light refreshing scent of fresh florals that I absolutely love.

beautycounter hand washThe Citrus Mimosa Hand Wash is a gentile cleanser that does not leave behind any residue. Made from organic aloe, green tea and calendula, this wash leaves your hands feeling hydrated and nourished, long after each wash.
The best part about both of these products is that they are not antibacterial! So you never have to worry about toxic ingredients such as triclosan, triclocarban, benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride, chloroxylenol, synthetic fragrances, and surfactants. Beautycounter is already way ahead of the game! This is a simple switch we can all make!

When my kids run in from school, the first thing they do is wash their hands. Having a peace of mind about the soap they are using gives me one less thing to have to worry about! Make it easy for everyone in your family, and switch your hand wash today!
