Activated charcoal has become a hot topic recently, and if you haven’t added charcoal to your health and beauty routine, then you’re missing out on more than just a black face mask.

Charcoal has been used for health benefits for thousands of years, especially by the Egyptians. Back then ; was used to help heal wounds. It wasn’t until the 1900s that charcoal’s absorbent powers were used on a wider scale. Now, you’ll see it being used for teeth whitening, digestive cleaning, poison extracting, water cleansing and toxin absorbing. As such, it’s been made into a variety of products such as face masks, pills, toothpaste, drinks, and even soap!

Activated charcoal has immense absorption powers. It can absorb thousands of times its own weight in harmful substances, which is why it’s so beneficial for your health.

Activated Charcoal Benefits

If you’re ever bitten by a poisonous snake, spider or other insect, charcoal can be used to draw out the poison from the bite. It can also be used to treat diarrhea, upset stomach, and diseases of the mouth and foot. Charcoal can eliminate toxins from the blood in your liver and kidney, purify blood transfusions, deodorize wounds, and clean out your digestive tract.

You can find many skin care products made from activated charcoal to help detoxify and absorb impurities in your skin. It’s a  perfect natural spot treatment for those with acne. Below are some of my favorite products made with charcoal. I hope you enjoy reading and find a few healthy tips or two!

Activated Charcoal Products

Charcoal Mask

charcoal purifying face mask beautycounterSome of my favorite skin care products are the Purifying Charcoal Mask and Charcoal Cleansing Bar from Beautycounter. They make a powerful duo and can also be used separately.

The Charcoal Mask is a mineral-rich mix of kaolin clay and charcoal that draws out impurities, reduces the appearance of pores, and increases your skin’s elasticity. Your skin will feel so new and refreshed as if you just came out of a spa (without having to step out of your home 😉 ). It’s free of parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances, so you never have to worry about harmful toxins that can cause allergies, dryness or even disrupt your hormones. Inside tip, I keep the mask on for a full 15 minutes but half way through I spray rosewater spray and then after I take off the mask I finish with either Nourishing Cleaning Balm or the Jasmine Anti Aging Lustro Face Oil. Works miracles for tired, sun drenched skin.

Charcoal Cleansing Bar

This soap is made with antioxidant-rich, organic green tea and hydrating organic coconut oil, which leaves your skin full of moisture. It’s so gentle on your face that you can use it on a daily basis on your entire body.

Charcoal Drinks

thicker than water charcoal drinkSince charcoal is a great detoxifier, it can be added into drinks and water! I love making charcoal lemonade. Some of my favorites are Juice Served Here, Moon Juice, Thicker Than Water and Pressed Juicery.  The Charcoal Lemonade pictured here is by Thicker Than Water. I love their blend because it includes Aloe Vera, natural organic lemon and a touch of stevia. Delicious.

Charcoal Pills

Charcoal comes in the form of pills, which you can take on a daily basis to help rid your body of toxins that you absorb from daily foods. The pills can also help with digestion, especially if you’re feeling a bit constipated. If you have food poisoning or are blowing out some toots, you can take a charcoal pill to eliminate any pain, discomfort and absorb the poison from the food. It’s important to note that at any time you ingest charcoal, you have to drink plenty of water to not only flush those toxins out once they are bound by the charcoal, but also rehydrate your body as it also sucks up water.

Charcoal Toothpaste

charcoal toothpasteActivated charcoal is a wonderful way to naturally whiten your teeth because it absorbs plaque and microscopic bits that stain teeth. If you’re using plain activated charcoal (not in the form of a paste), be very careful as it can permanently stain your clothes and carpet. For those of you who don’t want to use plain charcoal, there is a great charcoal toothpaste called Kobayashi Charcoal Power Toothpaste that really whitens and cleans your teeth!

Charcoal Deodorant

PiperWai charcoal deoderantIf you haven’t tried charcoal deodorant, then you’re missing out! PiperWai Natural Charcoal Deodorant is in a creme form and made without any harmful ingredients. It goes on invisibly, neutralizes odor and protects your clothes from perspiration. If you tend to sweat a lot or have sensitive skin, then this deodorant is the perfect solution. Yes, you apply with your hands, but once you get used to it you never go back!
